Mid-size Sport Utility
1991 WIDE TRACK DAIHATSU ROCKY 4X4 FEATURES UPGRADED ENGINE PERFORMANCE, FULL TIME FOUR WHEEL DRIVE AND NEW LUXURY OPTIONS
LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. For 1991 Daihatsu has expanded on the rugged versatility of its wide-track Rocky 4x4 with improved performance characteristics and an array of optional upgrades that refine city cruising efficiency and comfort.
The new 1991 wide-track Rocky 4x4 offers proven Japanese quality plus a level of amenities uncommon in mid-size sport utility vehicles. The Rocky's smooth on-road personality combines a comfortable ride, quick handling and significant standard features like an interchangeable hard top and/or
soft top, and a flip-up/lift-out sunroof which can be removed for the open-air look.
And despite its civilized good looks and well-mannered street ride, the Rocky prowls aggressively over tough off-road trails with ease.
Offering the widest wheel track in its class, at 57.9 inches, the Rocky provides extra stability, both off-road and around tight corners. Its independent double wishbone front suspension helps to smooth out country ruts and city potholes.
The Rocky's cargo space can be expanded by positioning the fold-up rear seat against the front seats. The Rocky can also be fitted with a roof rack over the forward cab area. For easy loading of large items, the rear door opens out, not down.
NEW FOR 1991
New for 1991, the Rocky offers the following upgrades and/or additions.
A new full time four wheel drive version offers sure-footed on-road performance with improved traction on slippery or wet surfaces and better control on all types of driving surfaces, making cornering maneuvers much more manageable. The full time four wheel drive helps Rockyowners get home during inclement weather, while others are left spinning their wheels.
The center differential type full time four wheel drive is provided by differential gears incorporated in the
transfer case.
Power has been boosted in the mid-range RPM level, giving noticeably improved acceleration for smoother transitions into higher speeds. The increase in torque in the 3,200 RPM to 3,500 RPM range heightens engine performance for enhanced driveability around town. This was achieved by adding an air chamber in the intake track to improve air flow efficiency.
A new rear anti-lock brake system (ABS) is standard equipment on the full time four wheel drive Rocky. The new ABS ensures straight-line braking control, improves vehicle stability in hard-braking situations and allows faster stopping. Brake fluid pressure is electronically controlled to alternately increase and decrease rear brake pressure and help prevent skidding of the rear tires.
Automatic locking hubs are now available on the 1991 Rocky for user convenience and driving comfort. Standard on SX models and optional on SE models, (except full time four wheel drive models), the automatic locking hubs allow the driver to shift into 4WD without ever leaving the vehicle to lock the hubs.
In addition, the Rocky now sports such optional luxury features as power windows and door locks, electric remote control dual outside mirrors and stylish aluminum wheels. The electric remote control dual outside mirrors are optional on all models, while manual control dual outside mirrors are standard on all models. A rear luggage lamp has been added as standard equipment on 1991 models.
ENGINE AND CHASSIS
The Rocky is powered by a 1.6-litre, four cylinder, 16-valve engine with multi-port fuel injection. The engine produces 94 horsepower at 5,700 RPM and 94 foot-pounds of torque at 3,200 RPM.
A smooth 5-speed manual transmission powers the Rocky along in two wheel drive for the city, or in four wheel high and low for more rugged terrain. The Rocky offers double wishbone front suspension with torsion bar springs and leaf spring suspension in the rear.
STANDARD FEATURES AND OPTION PACKAGES
The Rocky is appointed in two trim levels which offer buyers a range of amenities: the economical SE model combines outstanding value with a high level of standard features, while the luxurious SX model and SX-Plus trim create an even more luxurious driving environment.
All 1991 Rocky models include such standard features as 3-point seat belts front and rear, padded rear roll bar, reclining front bucket seats, intermittent windshield wipers, a locking glovebox, and, unlike some competitors, a back seat, as well as a spare tire with a spare tire lock.
The Rocky SX receives numerous upgrades including tilt steering column, premium fabric seats, halogen headlights, a remote rear door lock, rear window defogger and rear window wiper and washer.
Options include power steering, air conditioning, a unique interchangeable soft top conversion kit and an AM/FM cassette with two or four speakers. Separate option packages, including the popular preferred package, customize the Rocky and add amenities under one convenient price grouping.
OFF-ROAD GEARING AND PACKAGE
The Rocky enters off-road territory armed with rock-crawling standard features including a padded rear roll bar, fuel tank cover plate, front and rear towing hooks and low gearing.
An optional off-road package equips the Rocky with a limited slip rear differential, engine and transfer case skid plates, headlight washers, front bumper guard, larger P225/70R15 tires, front and rear mud guards and a gauge package including inclinometer, voltage meter and a digital clock.
